Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 can green beans 15 oz, drained
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup 10.5 oz
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese shredded, divided
  • 1 bag frozen Tater Tots 32 oz
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Mixing bowl
  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • Wooden spoon

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until fully browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the browned beef, drained green beans, cream of mushroom soup, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir until evenly mixed.
  4. Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish. Arrange a single layer of frozen Tater Tots on the bottom. Spread half of the beef mixture over the Tater Tots and sprinkle with half of the cheddar cheese.
  5. Add a second layer of Tater Tots, then top with the remaining beef mixture and the remaining cheddar cheese.
  6. Bake uncovered for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the Tater Tots are crisp and the casserole is hot and bubbly.
  7. Let the casserole rest for a few minutes before scooping and serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, season the beef well while browning and taste the filling before assembling the casserole.
If you like a crispier topping, place the dish under the broiler for 2 to 3 minutes at the end of baking, watching closely.
You can swap the cheddar for Colby Jack or a cheddar blend for a slightly different flavor.
Letting the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving helps it set up and makes it easier to scoop.
Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat in the oven or air fryer to keep the Tater Tots from getting soggy.
