Course: Appetizer, Dinner
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ½ yellow onion finely diced
  • 8 oz tomato sauce
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 8 slices garlic toast frozen
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese shredded

Method

  1. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion until the beef is browned and no longer pink. Drain off any excess grease.
  2. Add the tomato sauce, ketchup, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, onion powder, and garlic powder to the skillet. Stir well to combine, then simmer for a few minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.
  3. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  4. Arrange the frozen garlic toast slices in a single layer on a large baking sheet.
  5. Spoon a generous amount of the sloppy Joe mixture onto each slice of garlic toast, then sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top.
  6. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the toast is hot and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  7. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

For the best texture, let the sloppy Joe mixture simmer until thick so the garlic toast stays crisp and does not get soggy.
You can swap the cheddar for mozzarella, Monterey Jack, or a cheddar blend if that is what you have on hand.
If your garlic toast is smaller, divide the meat mixture lightly so each piece can hold the topping without spilling over.
These are best served right away while the cheese is bubbly and the toast is still crisp.
Store leftover sloppy Joe filling separately in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat before assembling fresh garlic toast.
